Most dentists recommend that children and adults should visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning. This frequency is also usually covered by most dental insurance plans. Six months is enough time for plaque and tartar to build up on the teeth and require removal by a deep cleaning.
However, some patients may have to visit the dentist more frequently. Depending upon certain factors and health conditions, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits and cleanings. You may need to see your dentist more often if you:
In addition to your regular checkups, see a dentist immediately if you develop a toothache or other mouth pain that doesn’t go away or comes and goes; it can be a sign of an infection that should be treated.
Other dental emergencies include breaking a tooth, having a tooth knocked out, or losing a filling. Don’t put going to the dentist off until your next check-up appointment if you experience any of these.
Your dental checkup appointment takes about an hour, as it involves more than just the dentist looking at your teeth. Here are the reasons why you need one every six months.
Even the best at-home oral care will not remove every bit of plaque from your teeth. This missed plaque can harden into tartar or it can cause cavities and gingivitis. That is why most dental visits begin with a professional cleaning.
Before your dentist examines you, a hygienist will gently scrape tartar and plaque away from your teeth including just below the gum line. Then they’ll polish and floss your teeth, leaving them smooth and shiny. Receiving a dental cleaning every six months also gives the hygienist a chance to assess how you’re brushing and flossing your teeth at home, and make any recommendations to improve your oral care routine.
Dental x-rays allow the dentist to uncover any hidden cavities or other issues that may be more difficult to catch during the exam. Regular x-rays also help the dentist monitor the development and growth pattern of wisdom teeth, adult teeth, and the overall condition of your mouth.
About 37,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer every year, and it’s the sixth most common kind of cancer. One of the best ways to catch any signs of oral cancer and treat it while it’s in the early stage is to visit the dentist regularly.
Before your dentist examines your teeth, they will carefully screen you for oral cancer. Your dentist will feel the glands of your neck and check all inside surfaces of your mouth including the cheeks, tongue, and palate for signs of anything unusual.
Fillings, crowns and veneers, and other dental work usually doesn’t last forever. Fillings need to be replaced once they’re no longer protecting the tooth they were placed in. They can pull away from the sides, allowing bacteria to seep in and cause decay all over again.
Your dentist will check your fillings and other dental work to make sure it’s still functioning to protect your teeth. They will make recommendations to replace the work before a problem has a chance to start.
Your dentist will also examine your gums for any signs of gingivitis—the earliest stage of gum disease which is reversible—and can detect periodontitis. They may use a probe to gently check for any pockets where the gums are starting to recede or pull away from the sides of teeth. They will then make recommendations for treatment and what you can do at home to improve your gum health.
Lastly, your dentist will check your teeth for cavities and chart where the decay is to create a treatment plan. Receiving a dental exam every six months allows your dentist to find any small cavities or areas of concern before they have a chance to get deeper, cause pain, and require more extensive and costlier dental work such as dental implants. The emphasis is on preventative care and treating small problems before they get worse.
Covid-19 Alert
At Wildcreek Dental your safety is very important to us. Therefore, we have implemented new safety measure based upon the Guidelines set out by the ADA and CDC. Please note the following changes:
• Safety measures implemented – We have installed a HEPA filter air purifier to remove particles from the air. Staff will wear face coverings whenever possible. Plexiglass has been installed as a barrier from the front office to the waiting area. Hand sanitizer stations have been placed throughout the office. Any aerosol generating procedures will require additional personal protective equipment by the staff. Patients having aerosol generating procedures will have a dry shield suction, a high evacuation suction and rubber dam placed whenever appropriate to reduce the amount of aerosol particles in the air. Additional disinfecting methods have been implemented between patients and common patient areas will be disinfected multiple times daily. Please advise that more measures will be implemented as additional scientific research demonstrates the benefits of additional methods to prevent infection.
• Staff – All staff members are screened prior to the start of the day. Anyone presenting with a fever or perceived to be at high risk will be sent home
• Prescreening phone call – we will be calling you prior to your visit to ask a series of Covid related questions. Should we decide it’s best to reschedule your visit we will work with you to schedule your next visit when deemed most appropriate
• Check in – you are welcome to enter the building on your own. Please wear a mask at all times util you are seated in the dental chair. This is to better control the area that should be disinfected between patients. You will check in upfront and immediately sanitize your hands. We will take your temperature and screen you prior to your visit. We reserve the right to reschedule your appointment if your risk is perceived to be too high.
• Waiting area – due to social distancing we have limited space available. If all seats are taken, please inform the front desk that you will wait outside or in your car. We will call your phone when we are ready to seat you. If you do not have a mask, we will attempt to provide one for you. As masks are in limited supply, you may be asked to wait outside if you do not have one with you.
• Guests – Unless accompanied with a minor or deemed medically necessary due to anxiety, patients will not be permitted to bring guests in order to adhere to social distancing.
We realize the additional burden these regulations place on your visit. We believe that maintaining your oral health is critical, even at this time, and we greatly appreciate your patience. We cannot wait for life to return back to normal, or at least the new normal, and we will do our best to accommodate you through your dental visit. Thank you for your understanding.
Sincerely,
The Wildcreek Dental Team!
